Sample Name: Yamato 980318 Location: Minami-Yamato Nunataks Dimensions (cm): 6.9 x 4.7 x 3.8 Weight (g): 166.81 Weathering: B/C Fracturing: B Meteorite Type: Eucrite
Macroscopic description This is a subrounded complete stone. 70% of its surface is covered shiny black fusion crust. Exposed interior shows coarse-grained granular texture composed of gray pyroxene and white plagioclase.
Petrographic Description (Yamaguchi A.) The section consists of coarse-grained low-Ca pyroxene and plagioclase (<5 mm) with minor amount of opaque minerals. The low Ca-pyroxene contains exsolution lamellae of augite (~30 μm thick). Pyroxene compositions cluster around Wo2Fs48-49 and Wo45-46Fs18-19. Plagioclase composition is An88-91. This meteorite is a Mg-rich eucrite.
Oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O = +3.18, δ17O = +1.36, Δ17O = -0.29) analyzed by Clayton and Mayeda indicates that this meteorite is an HED.
