DISCOVERY OF THE ZHIGANSK, USSR, IRON METEORITE

Name: ZHIGANSK

Place of find: About 250 km NE. of Zhigansk, Yakutsk ASSR, USSR.

68°0'N., 128°18'E.

Date of find: 1966, recognized 1981

Class and type: Iron.

Number of individual

specimens: 1

Total weight: Estimated to be 600-900 kg.

Circumstances of find: Found by S.S. Jasak and V.M. Faber. A piece weighing 60 g was removed and its meteoritic nature confirmed. 17.2 g of this small piece is now in the collection of the Academy of Sciences and the recovery of the main mass is proposed.
