Acfer 360

Achondrite (ureilite)

A 68 g stone was found in the Acfer region, Algerian Sahara. Mineralogy and classification (E.-M. Chamorro, K. Pistre, P. Beck, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, ENSL, P. Grandjean, Université Claude Bernard, Lyon 1): typical ureilite texture, mm-sized crystals, triple juctions and curved intergranular boundaries are observed. The mineral composition is olivine (Fo83) 90 vol. %, pigeonite (En75Wo8) 8 vol.% and interstitial carbonaceous material 2 vol.%. Olivine often contains metal inclusions, and pigeonite sometimes includes rounded olivine grains. Metal-rich rims surround silicate grain boundaries. Flakes of dark carbonaceous material consist of diamonds in the form of small grains within graphite, as revealed by Raman spectroscopy. Weathering grade appears to be minor. Specimens: main mass, F. Beroud and C. Boucher; type specimen 14 g, ENSL.
