Northwest Africa 2484 Northwest Africa Found 2004 Achondrite (eucrite) A single stone of 11.9 g almost completely covered by fusion crust was found in 2004 by an anonymous finder in the Western Saharan desert and purchased in Erfoud in 2004. Classification and mineralogy (A. Greshake, Berlin): breccia composed of large often exsolved Ca-pyroxenes and plagioclase set into a more fine-grained matrix dominated by augite, exsolved Ca-pyroxene, orthopyroxene, and plagioclase; contains rare impact melt fragments; plagioclase, An83.7-93.3; orthopyroxene, Fs51.8-58.6Wo1.8-5.0; pigeonite, Fs23.4-57.8Wo5.2-17.3; augite, Fs21.8-41.6Wo28.3-46.0; minor phases include silica, ilmenite, Cr-Al-Ti-spinel, and sulfides; moderate degree of shock; low degree of weathering. Main mass with anonymous finder; type specimen 2.8 g plus one polished thin section MNB. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
