Northwest Africa 2515

Tata area, Morocco

Found August 2004

Achondrite (diogenite)

One entirely crusted stone, weighing 217.6 g was purchased in Erfoud in 2004 September. Classification and mineralogy (M. Bourot-Denise, MNHNP): the major mineral (95 vol%) is orthopyroxene, in large crystals. Plagioclase is rare, making blebs (<50 µm) in spaces between pyroxene crystals, opaque blebs (Fe-Ni, troilite, chromite) are aligned inside pyroxene crystals; a few silica areas. Orthopyroxene is very homogeneous, Fs26.5 ± 0.8 Wo3.3 ± 0.3. Magnetic susceptibility 3.13 (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE, Aix en Provence). Estimated shock stage S3; weathering grade W3. Specimens: type specimen 22.5 g and one polished mount, MNHNP; main mass with PThomas.
