Morocco

Purchased 2004 August

Achondrite (eucrite)

A complete, very fresh stone (249 g) with thin black fusion crust was purchased from a Moroccan dealer in Rissani by A. and G. Hupé (Hupé) in 2004 August.  Classification and mineralogy (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS):  Monomict breccia consisting of relatively coarse grained, ophitic basaltic eucrite clasts composed of calcic plagioclase and exsolved pigeonite, with accessory chromite, ilmenite, silica polymorph, troilite, fayalite and zircon.  Pyroxene compositions: orthopyroxene Fs63.1Wo2.7 - Fs64.7Wo1.7, FeO/MnO = 31.2 - 32.3; clinopyroxene Fs25.1Wo44.9 - Fs27.0Wo44.3, FeO/MnO = 39.3 - 40.2.  This sample bears some resemblance to NWA 3137, although the latter is not brecciated; it is not paired with NWA 3142. Specimens: type specimen, 20 g, and one polished thin section, UWS; main mass, xHupé.
