Northwest Africa 3147

Morocco

Purchased 2005 January

Achondrite (eucrite)

A single, 70% crusted stone (290 g) was purchased from a Moroccan dealer in Tagounite by G. Hupé (Hupé) in 2005 January.  Classification and mineralogy (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS): Granular textured aggregate of exsolved pigeonite and anorthite (An91.0-93.1Or0.4), with accessory silica polymorph (with abundant troilite inclusions), ilmenite and chromite.  The pyroxene grains consist of prominent exsolution lamellae of augite (Fs25.0-27.1Wo42.4-44.4, FeO/MnO = 33.6-37.0) within orthopyroxene (Fs60.5-61.0Wo1.5-2.4, FeO/MnO = 30.3-33.0)   The texture and mineralogy of this specimen are very similar to those of NWA 3137 (which was analyzed concurrently), and it is very likely that these two specimens are paired stones.  Specimens: type specimen, 20.3 g, and one polished thin section, UWS; main mass, xHupé.
