Northwest Africa 2041

Find: June 2003

Ordinary Chondrite (type 3)

History: Purchased in June 2003 from a Moroccan dealer in Erfoud for DGregory.

Physical characteristics: Several stones weighing a total of 4.5 kg.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) The samples contain abundant, fairly well-defined chondrules. Olivine, orthopyroxene, and small grains of troilite are present. Metal is absent.

Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Olivine (Fa5–25), orthopyroxene (Fs0–3). Oxygen isotopes: (D. Rumble, CIW) Laser fluorination of two whole rock samples (all reported as ‰); δ18O = 4.85, 4.875; δ17O = 3.00, 3.03; Δ17O = 0.449, 0.466.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (type 3); S1, W2.

Type specimens: A total of 25.6 g of sample and one polished thin section are on deposit at UWS. DGregory holds the main mass.
