Writeup from MB 108:
Northwest Africa 2409 (NWA 2409) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: Jan 2018 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated) History: The meteorite was exported from Morocco to Tucson where it was purchased by N. Gessler. Physical characteristics: 70% of surface was a glossy fusion crust. Virtually no caliche on surface. The interior shows a uniform, unbrecciated, relatively coarse-grained basalt; light grey overall, with medium-gray pyroxene and white plagioclase. Petrography: The texture is unbrecciated subophitic, relatively coarse for a eucrite with grains typically 2-3 mm across, up to 4 mm long. The mode shows a typical eucrite preponderance of pyroxene and plagiolcase, with minor ilmenite and silica, and very minor troilite. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene clusters near Fs58Wo3, augite near Fs25Wo44, both typical for a noncumulate eucrite. Pyroxene FeO/MnO averages (23 analyses) 29.8. Plagioclase (10 analyses) is An87-92. The bulk composition, determined by INAA and fused-bead EPMA applied to 2 chips totaling 650 mg, is uncommonly Ti-poor for a noncumulate eucrite, with bulk Mg/(Mg+Fe) ~ 40 mol%, 0.4 wt% TiO2, and 0.43 wt% Na2O. Classification: Eucrite, unbrecciated. Specimens: Main mass with Gessler, type specimen at UCLA. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
