Northwest Africa 4885 (NWA 4885)

Purchased: 2006

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite was purchased in 2006 from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Five greyish fragments partly covered with fusion crust

Petrography: Brecciated eucrite composed of coarse-grained basaltic clasts set into more fine-grained matrix. Dominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and FeS; no metallic Fe was found.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs53.1±2.1Wo9.1±2.7 (Fs50.4-65.0Wo5.6-12.4, n=10, FeO/MnO=29-31); Ca-pyroxene: Fs35.1±6.7Wo32.9±7.7 (Fs26.0-42.3Wo24.1-43.3, n=12, FeO/MnO=27-32); calcic plagioclase: An86.4±5.8 (An78.6-91.3, n=11)
