Northwest Africa 4886 (NWA 4886)

Purchased: 2006

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite was purchased in 2006 from a local meteorite dealer in Rissani, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Greyish fragment partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Breccia composed of basaltic clasts with mineral grains of 50-400 µm and up to 1 mm sized black melt clasts set into a clastic mineral matrix. Dominant minerals are exsolved pyroxenes and often laths-shaped calcic plagioclase. Minor phases are silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, and zircon. No metallic Fe has been found.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs50.7±7.8Wo6.3±1.6 (Fs30.7-57.3Wo3.0-9.9, n=15, FeO/MnO=26-32); Ca-pyroxene: Fs38.3±9.2Wo31.3±7.8 (Fs26.6-52.5Wo20.7-42.8, n=4, FeO/MnO=28-31); calcic plagioclase: An85.5±1.8 (An83.1-88.1, n=11)
