Northwest Africa 4890 (NWA 4890)

Purchased: 2006

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: The meteorite was purchased in 2006 from a local meteorite dealer in Rissani, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish fragment partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is an unbrecciated basalt predominantly composed of exsolved pyroxenes and calcic plagioclase with highly variable grain sizes ranging from 50 µm to 1.5 mm. Minor phases are silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, and metallic Fe.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs57.1±2.8Wo7.3±3.3 (Fs51.1-60.2Wo3.9-14.6, n=11, FeO/MnO=29-32); Ca-pyroxene: Fs32.0±3.9Wo38.4±4.9 (Fs30.0-44.4Wo23.1-41.1, n=12, FeO/MnO=29-32); calcic plagioclase: An88.8±0.6 (An88.2-90.3, n=11)
