Northwest Africa 4900 (NWA 4900)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2007

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a chondritic texture with well-defined, loosely packed, and partly flattened chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 0.75 mm). Opaque phases in the fine-grained matrix are strongly altered sulfides and FeNi metal.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3). L group based on chondrule size and magnetic susceptibility interpreted in the light of the weathering grade Rochette et al. (2003).
