Northwest Africa 4903 (NWA 4903)

Purchased: 2007

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Tagounite, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia composed of up to 7 mm sized basaltic, gabbroic, and impact melt clasts and mineral fragments set in a fine-grained clastic matrix. Main minerals are exsolved pyroxene, compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, and fayalite. No metallic iron was found.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs51.0±1.0Wo2.9±0.7 (Fs49.4-52.5Wo1.9-3.9, FeO/MnO=28-32, n=12); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs23.9±1.5Wo43.4±0.9 (Fs21.7-27.3Wo41.5-44.2, FeO/MnO=25-32, n=11); zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs35.9±4.9Wo5.4±0.7 (Fs29.4-43.0Wo4.6-6.8, n=10, FeO/MnO=26-33, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An90.8±4.5 (An84.6-95.9, n=12)
