Grove Mountains 020281 (GRV 020281)        72° 58' 44"S,  75° 15' 39"E

Antarctica

Found: 10 January 2003

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: A stone of 1.79 g was recovered by Y. Ju on a moraine in Grove Mountains, Antarctica. Part of a black fusion crust remains.

Petrography: (A. Zhang, PMO) The stone contains 52 vol% silicate phases and 48 vol% metal and sulfide. The silicate part consists of low-Ca pyroxene and plagioclase. Most low-Ca pyroxene grains are nearly homogeneous without high-Ca pyroxene exsolution lamellae. Some low-Ca pyroxene grains show chemical zoning.

Geochemistry: (A. Zhang, PMO) Low-Ca pyroxene (En57.4-71.4, average=En61.9±5.0; Fs25.8-40.6, average=Fs35.6±5.2; Wo1.7-4.0, average=Wo2.4±0.6) and plagioclase (An74.9-92.9, average=An82.3±8.1; Ab7.1-25.4, average=Ab17.7±8.1).

Classification: Achondrite (Mesosiderite)

Specimens: All of the sample mass and a polished thin section are on deposit at PRIC.
