Find: 2007

Achondrite (Aubrite)

History: The main mass of this meteorite (380 g) was bought by the main mass holder from a Moroccan dealer in Morocco in 2007. The find location is the Hammada du Draa, West-Morocco, the exact find position is not given.

Physical characteristics: The total known weight of this meteorite is about 1130 g. It consists of the main mass and many smaller and tiny pieces due to its brecciated and weathered nature.

Petrography Classification (J. Schlüter, Ham):. Monomict breccia dominated by large whitish enstatite grains. The sample provided for examination shows enstatite crystals up to 3 x 4 mm in a matrix of finer enstatite fragments. Further subordinate components are plagioclase, several clear grains of SiO2 (up to 300 μm) and relicts of FeNi metal. The SiO2 phase is anisotropic, a powder diffraction analysis indicates cristobalite (low). Grain boundaries of the whole meteorite are interlarded with limonite. All enstatite crystals show fine shock lamellae.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (n = 10) En99.37Fs0,23Wo0,40. Plagioclase (n=4): An1.63- 2.55 and Or3.46-6.90.

Classification: Achondrite, brecciated (Aubrite). Shock and weathering of medium to high degree.

Type specimens: A total of 23.4 g of sample and one polished thin section is on deposit at the Mineralogical Museum, University of Hamburg, Germany.  Mr. H. Burkard, Bonn, Germany  holds the main mass.
