Aumieres
History (P.-M. Pelé, meteor-center.com): June 3, 1842, around 9:00 pm, a meteor was observed across a large part of southern France. In Toulouse, witnesses did not mention hearing an explosion. In Mende, a witness observed the bolide traveling approximately northeast to southwest, passing roughly over the city. Two minutes after the meteor disappeared, a thunderous roar was heard. That witness, an engineer, estimated that the fall took place about 40 km southwest of Mende; this calculation was nearly correct. At the same time, very close to the village of Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac, the meteorite fell 1 m from a shack where a shepherd stood, according to testimonies collected after the fall by Mr. Lescure, a scholar living in Lavernhe. The place of fall is a hamlet today called Almières.
