Northwest Africa 5375 (NWA 5375)

Purchased: 2008

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Polymict breccia composed of up to 4 mm sized fine-grained granular clasts set in a coarse-grained basaltic groundmass. Main minerals are up to 1 mm sized exsolved pyroxene, zoned low-Ca pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, and FeS. No metallic iron detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to exsolution lamellae: Fs55.8±1.7Wo2.5±0.8 (Fs54.3-59.0Wo1.1-3.3, FeO/MnO=29-31, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs15.5±0.1Wo43.7±0.2 (Fs15.3-15.7Wo43.5-44.0, FeO/MnO=24-28, n=7); zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs47.6±5.6Wo2.4±0.1 (Fs40.2-53.9Wo2.2-2.5, FeO/MnO=30-35, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An91.6±0.4 (An91.0-92.3, n=7)
