Northwest Africa 5378 (NWA 5378) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2008 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5) History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock mostly covered with fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark grayish interior and consists of large, partly flattened and well separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 700 µm, up to 2 mm) set in abundant recrystallized matrix predominantly composed of ferroan Ni-bearing olivine. Minor phases are low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, nests of intermediate plagioclase, and FeS. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; no metal detected. Some chondrules show brownish staining due to terrestrial alteration. Geochemistry: olivine: Fa28.7±0.2 (Fa28.4-28.9, FeO/MnO=116±12; NiO=0.37±0.07 wt%, n=7); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs25.9±0.8Wo0.6±0.2 (Fs24.9-27.1Wo0.5-1.0, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs10.0±1.3Wo43.7±3.3 (Fs8.9-12.4Wo37.3-46.1, n=5); feldspar: An25.2-62.6Ab36.7-71.3Or0.7-3.6, n=6; magnetite contains 4.0±0.1 wt% Cr2O3, n=4 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
