Northwest Africa 5497 (NWA 5497)

Purchased: 2007 Sep

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Marcin Cimala in September 2007 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS, and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-defined unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 790±300 µm, N = 26) containing devitrified glass are set in a sparse matrix containing kamacite (altered to Fe oxides), troilite and chromite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa15.6±15.5, range Fa1.6-54.0, N = 10; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.02-0.24 wt.%, mean 0.13±0.06 wt.%, N = 30), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs13.8±6.9Wo1.2±0.9, range Fs6.0-22.8Wo0.3-2.5, N = 9), pigeonite (Fs41.8Wo13.7), subcalcic augite (Fs27.4±19.7Wo24.0±2.3, range Fs14.1-56.0Wo21.9-27.3, N = 4). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.52.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 22.1 g including one polished thin section at YPMNH; remainder with Mr. M. Cimala.
