Northwest Africa 5584 (NWA 5584)

Purchased: 2008

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Agadir, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Three brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows an unbrecciated dark brownish interior with well defined partly flattened chondrules (mean diameter about 400 µm) and individual mineral fragments in a matrix dominated by Fe-rich olivine. Olivine and low-Ca-pyroxene ae frequently compositionally zoned. Minor phases are Ca-pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, chromite, and sulfides; no metal detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa23.3±16.1 (Fa0.6-36.4, n=21); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs18.5±6.9Wo0.7±0.4 (Fs10.2-28.9Wo0.2-1.2, n=11); Ca-pyroxene: Fs5.7±0.6Wo37.6±1.9 (Fs4.9-6.7Wo35.2-39.4, n=5)
