Northwest Africa 6472 (NWA 6472)

Northwest Africa

Purchased: 2010 Oct

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3.2)

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Large well-formed chondrules in a more stained matrix. Minerals are olivine, orthopyroxene, subcalcic augite, augite, sodic plagioclase, chromite, altered kamacite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa0.7-37.4, Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine = 0.11-0.47 wt.%, mean 0.23, s.d. 0.11, N = 8), orthopyroxene (Fs3.8-19.9Wo0.2-2.6), subcalcic augite (Fs8.9Wo28.2), augite (Fs9.5Wo38.4).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3.2). Subtype estimated to be 3.2 based on Cr2O3 range in ferroan olivine. Estimation of subtype based on histograms (Fig. 4) in Grossman and Brearley (2005).
