Writeup |
Writeup from MB 100:
Northwest Africa 6948 (NWA 6948) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: May 2011 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5, melt breccia) Physical characteristics: Cut surface shows lenticular regions of L5 material interleaved with zones of fine grained shock-darkened and melt-textured material. There appears to have been flow of the latter around the clasts. Petrography: Specimen consists of regions with sparse chondrules surrounded by very fine-grained regions lacking chondrules (apparently representing quenched melt and/or highly shocked domains). The mafic minerals have variable compositions. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa22.7-24.2), orthopyroxene (Fs18.4-19.5Wo3.6-2.2; Fs12.0Wo2.1), subcalcic augite (Fs13.8Wo28.4; Fs16.0Wo25.6). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
