Northwest Africa 6974 (NWA 6974)

Purchased: 2011

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite was purchased in 2011 from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Four greyish individuals almost completely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Fragmental breccia composed of abundant up to 1.5 cm sized basaltic and impact melt clasts set into a fine-grained clastic matrix. Basaltic clasts and matrix are dominantly composed of exsolved pyroxene and often lath-shaped calcic plagioclase grains ranging from 20 to 300 µm. Minor phases include ilmenite, fayalite, silica, FeS, and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs49.4±15.2Wo2.6±0.9 (Fs22.0-62.4Wo1.7-5.1, n=30, FeO/MnO=25-33); Ca-pyroxene: Fs26.2±0.3Wo44.2±0.2 (Fs25.4-26.5Wo43.9-44.5, n=8, FeO/MnO=28-31); calcic plagioclase: An89.9±1.2 (An87.8-91.4, n=15)
