Northwest Africa 7047 (NWA 7047)

Morocco

Find: 2008

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5)

History: Sample found in 2008, purchased in Tucson from A. Aaronson. Type sample is catalogued at ROM as M48979.

Physical characteristics: Blocky fusion crusted individual (20 × 15 × 10 cm) displaying minor broken surfaces. Magnetic susceptibilty of a 19.84 g specimen is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 5.21.

Petrography: Broken chondrules are set in a dark matrix filled with Fe oxide weathering products. Chondrule mesostasis is recrystallized. Olivine and pyroxene grains exhibit sharp to undulatory extinction. Both metal and sulfide grains show alteration on rims to Fe oxides.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite, H5 (S2) W3. High observed metal content and magnetic susceptibility are consistent with a weathered H chondrite.
