Northwest Africa 7306 (NWA 7306)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2011 Mar

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM, anomalous)

History: Purchased by Gary Fujihara in March 2011 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Tiny (typically <0.2 mm) chondrules (some with dust rims) and sparse mineral fragments (olivine, orthopyroxene) are set in an abundant, black, very fine grained matrix composed of unresolvable mafic silicates, abundant troilite (some in polycrystalline clusters) and taenite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (in chondrules Fa3.4-4.3; angular grain Fa32.1), orthopyroxene (in chondrules Fs1.8-3.0Wo1.4-0.9; angular grain Fs7.7Wo3.7). Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): analyses of acid-washed subsamples by laser fluorination gave, respectively δ17O = 3.073, 2.295; δ18O = 8.232, 7.052; Δ17O = -1.273, -1.428 per mil (for a TFL slope of 0.528). These values do not plot on any established trends and lie above the trend for CM chondrites.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite, CM, anomalous based on the elevated Δ17O relative to the main CM2 field.
