Northwest Africa 8162 (NWA 8162) Morocco Purchased: 2013 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict) History: Purchased by Blaine Reed from Eegooblago Meteorites at the Denver Gem and Mineral Show, 2013. Physical characteristics: Single stone, desert-weathered exterior; saw cut reveals breccia with large light-colored clasts bounded by numerous dark-colored veins. Petrography: Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows ~50% pyroxene and ~35% plagioclase, most in subophitic clasts, some in cataclastic zones, and ~15% shock-melt veins throughout. Accessory silica, chromite, and ilmenite. Minor zircon. Most pyroxenes with exsolution lamellae. Geochemistry: (C. Agee and N. Muttik, UNM) EMPA. Low-Ca pyroxene Fs61.0±1.5Wo3.0±1.1, Fe/Mn=32±1, n=17; high-Ca pyroxene Fs34.8±10.0Wo34.3±11.6, Fe/Mn=33±1, n=8; plagioclase Or0.6±0.2Ab10.2±1.5An89.2±1.4, n=3. Classification: Achondrite (Eucrite-mmict) Equilibrated basaltic eucrite; shock-melt brecciation throughout. Specimens: 24.2 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Reed holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||
