Northwest Africa 8339 (NWA 8339)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2013

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, cumulate)

History: Purchased by Ali and Mohammed Hmani in Erfoud, Morocco, 2013.

Physical characteristics: A dozen fragments with identical appearance. Shiny black fusion crust, broken surfaces show coarse white plagioclase and light green pyroxene.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows ~75% pyroxene and ~25% plagioclase, grains up to 2000 μm. Accessory troilite, chromite, and silica.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee and N. Muttik, UNM) Low-Ca pyroxene Fs34.5±0.4Wo2.2±0.6, Fe/Mn=31±1, n=34; augite Fs20.3±5.8Wo31.0±10.9, Fe/Mn=27±4, n=3; plagioclase An88.5±1.2, n=5.

Classification: Achondrite (cumulate eucrite).

Specimens: 20.5 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Ali and Mohammed Hmani hold the main mass.
