Northwest Africa 8437 (NWA 8437)

Purchased: 2013 Feb

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Purchased in 2013 in Tucson

Physical characteristics: Cut surface reveals a light gray brecciated interior.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Brecciated crystalline rock composed mostly of pyroxene and plagioclase, with accessory silica, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, metal. Both eucrite and diogenite material are present. The pigeonite in the eucrite material has augite exsolution.

Geochemistry: Eucrite: Orthopyroxene Fs53.4-60.5Wo10.2-5.7, FeO/MnO = 32.0, diogenite clasts: Orthopyroxene Fs25.0-34.1Wo2.8-2.5, FeO/MnO = 28.3. Plagioclase An90.6 Or0.3. Magnetic susceptibility log χ = 3.43  (χ in 10-9 m3/kg)..

Classification: Achondrite (howardite). Moderate weathering.
