Northwest Africa 8584 (NWA 8584)

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

Physical characteristics: Meteorite fragment without fusion crust. Very irregular shape due to wind erosion of exposed lithic clasts.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Achondritic clast-rich melt rock. Subrounded eucritic lithic clasts (up to 1.5 cm) with gabbroic texture and mineral fragments (mostly pyroxene and plagioclase) are embedded in a crystallized melt. The latter shows a quench texture, consisting of skeletal pyroxene and plagioclase crystals with sizes up to several 100 µm. Most pyroxene fragments show shock-deformed exsolution lamellae. Accessories are a silica polymorph, Cr-spinel, ilmenite, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (host): Fs60.3±1.6Wo2.4±0.5 (Fs57.9-62.5Wo1.5-3.2); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 31; n=9. Ca-rich pyroxene (exsolution lamellae): Fs25.7±0.3 Wo44.7±0.4 (Fs25.3-26.1Wo44.0-45.3); n=9. Plagioclase: An90.4±2.7Or0.3±0.4 (An84.0-93.9Or0.0-0.9); n=10.
