Writeup from MB 103:

Northwest Africa 8618 (NWA 8618)

Morocco

Purchased: 2014

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

History: Purchased in 2014 in Layoune

Physical characteristics: Two partially crusted dark stones. Cut surface reveals a dark gray interior with sparse small whitish chondrules

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrules and mineral fragments in a fine-grained Fe-rich matrix. Abundant sulfides and magnetite, rare metal. Many chondrules have accretionary dust mantles. Average chondrule size 320±160 μm. Matrix: chondrules+mineral fragments abundances are 7:3 (by point counting, N=235).

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa14.6±19.4 (Fa0.5-46.6, N=13). Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.34±0.15 wt% (N=6). Orthopyroxene Fs1.9-37.8Wo1.0-1.7 (N=2). Magnetic susceptibility log χ = 4.29 (χ in 10-9 m3/kg).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

Specimens: 6 g in CEREGE, main mass with Labenne
