Northwest Africa 8621 (NWA 8621)

Morocco

Purchased: 2014

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5)

History: Purchased in 2014 in Layoune

Physical characteristics: Cut surface reveals a dark grey interior.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Millimeter-sized chondrules in a recrystallized matrix. Olivine is the dominant silicate. Plagioclase in matrix is typically 20-40 μm. Opaques are mainly troilite and magnetite

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa29.8±0.33 (Fa29.3-30.1, N=6), FeO/MnO=117±20, NiO 0.44±0.07 wt.%. Pyroxene Fs22.5Wo11.7 (N=1). Magnetite contains 3.3±0.1 wt.% Cr2O3, 0.67 wt.% Al2O3, 0.23 wt.% NiO (N=3). Magnetic susceptibility log χ = 4.65 (χ in 10-9 m3/kg).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5). Moderate weathering
