Northwest Africa 8688 (NWA 8688)

Purchased: 2014

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H6)

History: Purchased by Adam Aaronson in Morocco, 2014.

Physical characteristics: Single stone, no fusion crust, irregular sandblasted exterior, saw cut reveals numerous small metal/sulfide grains and small chondrules set in a dark brown groundmass.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination polished mount shows equilibrated, recrystallized chondrules, plagioclase up to 100 μm. Kamacite, taenite, troilite, merrilite, Cl-rich apatite.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee and N. Muttik, UNM) Olivine Fa19.1±0.2, Fe/Mn=39±2, n=9; low-Ca pyroxene Fs17.0±0.3Wo1.4±0.2, Fe/Mn=24±1, n=14; plagioclase An12.5±0.2Ab82.0±0.8Or5.6±0.6, n=3.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H6). W1, S3.

Specimens: A total of 20 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Aaronson holds the main mass.
