Mauritania

Purchased: Sept 2014

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

Physical characteristics: Three pieces of partly fusion-crusted stones were found. Minimal weathering.

Petrography: Microprobe examination of a polished section shows 60% pyroxene, 35% maskelynite, minor merrillite, trace chlorapatite and pyrrhotite. Pyroxenes show core-to-rim zonation. Grain size of mm.

Geochemistry: Two distinct pyroxene compositional trends. Pigeonite, Fs_59.7±1.4Wo_18.3±3.6(Fs_57.7-62Wo_14.7-22.9, Fe/Mn=37±1, N=7); augite, Fs_29.7±10.5Wo_32.7±2.1(Fs_21-51Wo_27-35, Fe/Mn=30±4, N=11); maskelynite, An_48.0±5.1Ab_49.9±4.6Or_2.1±0.8(An_38.2-51.9Ab_46.1-59.9Or_1.1-4.1, N=11).
