Northwest Africa 8647 (NWA 8647) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2010 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) History: Numerous individuals up to several cm in size, all partly covered with fusion crust, were bought at a mineral market in Erfoud, Morocco. Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia composed of basaltic lithologies and mineral fragments set into a fine-grained melt-rich matrix. Calcic plagioclase and exsolved pyroxene are dominant minerals; accessories include SiO2 polymorphs, chromite, and troilite. The rock contains abundant recrystallized shock melt. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene, Fs60±0.9Wo2.9±0.7 (Fs58.3-61.3Wo2.2-4.7, n=15, FeO/MnO=30-34); Ca-pyroxene, Fs26.3±1.1Wo43.5±0.4 (Fs23.5-27.2Wo42.9-44, n=15, FeO/MnO=29-35); calcic plagioclase, An90.5±0.7 (An89.5-91.5, n=15) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
