Northwest Africa 8715 (NWA 8715)

Morocco

Purchased: Feb 2013

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

Petrography: Abundant chondrules (48 vol.%) with diameters ranging from 70 to 380 μm are visible. A few chondrules are 400-700 μm. A large number of individual olivine and pyroxene grains (9 vol.%) occur in the matrix. Major phases are olivine and low-Fe pyroxene (Fs<10). Minor phases include plagioclase, troilite and FeNi metal. A relative low abundance of matrix (37 vol.%). Abundant fine-grained inclusions (6 vol.%).

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa0.1-39.6); orthopyroxene (Fs0.1-3.4Wo0.8-2.8); pigeonite (Fs1.9-8.8Wo6.9-14.1); augite (Fs1.6-3.4Wo36.9-49.2); plagioclase (An72-76).
