Northwest Africa 10116 (NWA 10116)

Purchased: 2015

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6)

History: Purchased by Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin from a local dealer in Morocco who claimed that the piece was found in the region of Smara-Laayoune, Western Sahara.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish interior and is composed of few relict chondrules and rare CAIs set into abundant recrystallized matrix. Fe-rich olivine is by far the most abundant mineral phase, followed by feldspar, Ca-pyroxene, low-Ca pyroxene and Cr-bearing magnetite.

Geochemistry: Cr2O3 in magnetite: about 5 wt%.
