Northwest Africa 10674 (NWA 10674) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2015 Oct Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict) History: Purchased by Marc Jost from a Moroccan dealer in Brügg, Switzerland, in October 2015. Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Complex polymict breccia composed mainly of eucrite clasts and related debris, but with a significant component (20 vol.%) of dark, metal-bearing H6 chondrite clasts (up to 3 cm across) and sparse vitric breccia clasts, plus sparse (~2 vol.%) diogenite clasts, rare felsic anorthite-rich clasts (up to 1 cm across) and rare, small carbonaceous chondrite clasts (consisting of very small magnesian chondrules within a black matrix, reminiscent of CM2). The eucrite clasts have textures ranging from subophitic to microgabbroic to granulitic, and consist of exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, chromite, ilmenite, troilite and fayalite. The equilibrated H6 chondrite clasts contain rare chondrule remnants and relatively abundant stained metal. The vitric breccia clasts consist of angular grains of more magnesian orthopyroxene, magnesian olivine and stained kamacite within glass. One felsic clast (> 99 vol.% anorthite) contains accessory orthopyroxene, troilite and Ni-free metal. Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene host (Fs61.4Wo2.6, FeO/MnO = 27), clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae (Fs25.9-26.8Wo40.2-42.8, FeO/MnO = 25-27, N = 2), plagioclase (An89.5-90.5Or0.3, N = 2), orthopyroxene in vitric clast (Fs15.2Wo1.1, FeO/MnO = 36), olivine in H6 chondrite clast (Fa18.6), olivine in vitric clast (Fa14.4-16.7, FeO/MnO = 31-38, N = 2), diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs23.3-26.7Wo2.2-2.7, FeO/MnO = 26-27, N = 2), anorthite in felsic clast (An93.3Or0.3). Classification: Eucrite (polymict breccia). The H6 chondrite clasts and vitric breccia clasts containing magnesian silicate minerals and kamacite are a very unusual feature of this specimen, although equilibrated H chondrite clasts are also present in howardite NWA 3197.
