Touat 003        27°21.617’N, 0°07.017’W

Adrar, Algeria

Find: 1 Nov 2006

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL6)

History: Found by shepherd Mohamed Abdulaziz Ould Wahid on an erosion surface between two dunes, 6 km S of Al Mahbes, in November 2006.

Physical characteristics: The stone of 3579 g is covered with a black fusion crust. The color of the interior is greenish gray with rusty specks.

Petrography: (B. Hofmann, NMBE, M. Eggimann, Bern): Strongly brecciated texture with clasts up to 5 mm (monomict breccia). Only relict, very weakly delineated chondrules are present. Mean size of plagioclase grains is ~50 μm and ranges up to 150 μm. Iron and troilite grains show signs of minor weathering (W1). Troilite forms small nodules and veinlets. Accessories include chromite and ilmenite.

Geochemistry: (Å. Rosén, Bern and B. Hofmann, NMBE) Olivine compositions (N=19) are Fa29.1±0.4 (Fa30.3 by XRD), pyroxene compositions (n=13) are Fs25.1±0.5Wo2.40±0.07.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL6), shock stage S2, low weathering (W1).

Specimens: 33.3 g plus polished thin section at NMBE, main mass: Svend Buhl, Hamburg, Germany.
