Writeup from MB 107:
Northwest Africa 11564 (NWA 11564) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2017 Sep Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) History: Purchased by Habib Naji in September 2017 from a Mauritanian dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Small, rounded to irregularly shaped chondrules (apparent diameter 165 ± 80 µm, N = 20) accompanied by sparse angular mineral grains and some very fine grained CAI are set in a finer grained matrix (~30 vol.%, brown in thin section). Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa1.2-64.7, Cr2O3 in ferroan examples <0.02 wt.%, N = 7), orthopyroxene (Fs0.8-27.5Wo0.8-3.0, N = 3), clinopyroxene (Fs1.5-4.4Wo43.7-47.7, N = 2). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3). The below detection limit Cr2O3 contents in ferroan olivines indicate a petrologic subtype >3.6. Specimens: 24.05 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with H. Naji. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
