Northwest Africa 11934 (NWA 11934)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was bought from a Moroccan meteorite dealer at a mineral fair in Ensisheim, France.

Physical characteristics: Three fragments lacking any fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia composed of mineral and lithic clasts (basaltic and dark impact melt clasts) set into a fine-grained clastic matrix. Main minerals in clasts and matrix are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include up to 2 mm sized diogenetic orthopyroxene, silica, chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic Fe has been detected.

Geochemistry: pyroxene host to augite lamellae: Fs37.6±9.5Wo5.3±1.9 (Fs23.0-55.4Wo3.1-9.1, n=21, FeO/MnO=27-37); Ca-pyroxene: Fs34.4±10.8Wo36.3±3.2 (Fs25.0-57.8Wo29.3-41.8, n=19, FeO/MnO=27-38); diogenitic pyroxene: Fs29.1±0.2Wo3.3±0.2 (Fs28.8-29.4Wo2.9-3.7, n=11, FeO/MnO=28-35); calcic plagioclase: An91.2±1.4 (An88.6-94.3, n=13)
