Northwest Africa 11981 (NWA 11981)

Purchased: 2005

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4)

History: Purchased by an anonymous collector from a dealer at the Munich Show in 2005, subsequently acquired by the Hollis Collection and then donated to PSF.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Relatively small, well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 590±450 µm, N = 21) are set in a matrix containing fairly abundant altered metal, chlorapatite and merrillite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa_19.1±0.4(range Fa_18.7-19.9), Cr₂O₃ in ferroan examples <0.04 wt.%, N = 7), magnesian olivine core (Fa_5.1), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs_7.9±7.5Wo_1.6±1.5(range Fs_2.6-16.4Wo_0.2-1.5), N = 3), high-Ca pyroxene (Fs_6.8Wo_45.3; Fs_8.9Wo_40.8).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4).
