Northwest Africa 12228 (NWA 12228)

Northwest Africa

Purchased: 2018

Classification: LL3-6 melt breccia

History: Purchased by Fred Olsen in 2018 in Tucson, AZ.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Apart from one relict barred olivine (1054 um), no chondrules are present. Subangular clasts (0.5-7 mm) embedded in a dark matrix of impact melt. Feldspar present (10-100 um). Contains rounded blebs of troilite and angular grains of taenite. Equilibrated and unequilibrated clasts present.

Geochemistry: Equilibrated clasts: Olivine, Fa29.9±0.5 (N=32); Low Calcium Pyroxene, Fs26.9±0.7Wo2.9±0.2 (N=25); High-Ca pyroxene, Fs17.8±0.6Wo31.6±0.9 (N=25); Sodic plagioclase, An12 (N=4). Unequilibrated clasts: Olivine, Fa25.8-38.8; low-Ca pyroxene, Fs23.6-36.5Wo2.3-6.1.

Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (LL3-6 melt breccia)

Specimens: 9.7 grams at UCLA; main mass with Olsen.
