Northwest Africa 12009 (NWA 12009)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2017 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Marc Jost in June 2017 from a Moroccan dealer at the Ensisheim Show.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Well-formed, fairly closely packed chondrules (apparent diameter 950±610 µm, N = 24) are set in relatively fine grained matrix containing altered metal, merrillite and chlorapatite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa1.2-98.0, Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.09-0.18 wt.%, mean 0.1±0.04 wt.%, N = 7), orthopyroxene (Fs2.1-17.0Wo0.4-2.4, N = 3), subcalcic augite (Fs47.1Wo31.2), augite (Fs9.4Wo42.5). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.61.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 22.7 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder held by SJS.
