Northwest Africa 12213 (NWA 12213)

Algeria

Purchased: 2018 May

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL(L)3.2)

History: Purportedly found in Algeria and purchased by Ben Hoefnagels in May 2018 from a dealer in Guelmim, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Closely packed, well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 700±390 µm, N = 20) are set in a finer grained matrix containing altered metal.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa1.2-79.3, Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.05-0.46 wt.%, mean 0.16±0.10 wt.%, N = 32), orthopyroxene (Fs2.8-19.9Wo0.4-1.3, N = 4),pigeonite (Fs17.8Wo7.3), subcalcic augite (Fs4.2Wo36.4). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.57.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite LL(L)3.2. Subtype based on the observed range in Fa content of olivine and the range and mean of Cr2O3 contents in ferroan olivines, which are very similar to the results for Krymka (Grossman and Brearley, 2005).

Specimens: 30.5 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. B. Hoefnagels.
