Northwest Africa 12214 (NWA 12214)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018 Jan

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated)

History: Purchased in Temara, Morocco by Adam Aaronson in January 2018.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Unbrecciated specimen with intersertal texture. Minerals are exsolved pigeonite (now composed of microcrystalline sub grains), plagioclase, silica polymorph, ilmenite, troilite and minor secondary calcite. Plagioclase has in part been converted to maskelynite and in part to polycrystalline plagioclase.. Cross-cutting dark shock melt veinlets are present. The plagioclase in NWA 12214 has in part been converted to isotropic maskelynite and in part to polycrystalline plagioclase

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene host (Fs60.8-60.9Wo5.9-5.6, FeO/MnO = 31-32, N = 3), clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae (Fs29.8-30.7Wo41.8-41.3, FeO/MnO = 32, N = 2), plagioclase (An89.0-89.5Or0.5-0.7, N = 2).

Classification: Eucrite (unbrecciated, highly shocked).

Specimens: 20.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Aaronson.
