Northwest Africa 12296 (NWA 12296) Morocco Find: 2017 Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-4) Physical characteristics: The exterior fusion crust is dark brown and weathered. The interior is primarily reddish-brown with light gray to black clasts (0.1-1 mm). Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Breccia consisting of unequilibrated (R3) and equilibrated (R4) clasts. Well-formed chondrules (0.2-0.8 mm). Iron-nickel sulfides present; no metal observed. Shock melt veins present. Geochemistry: Olivine in type 3 clasts: Fa32.6±11.7 (Fa8.8-49.6, N=46); olivine in type 4 clasts: Fa38.2±0.8 (N=23); low-ca pyroxene in type 3 clasts: Fs20.5±7.4Wo2.4±1.0 (Fs11.2-35.8Wo0.7-5.5, N=40); Ca-pyroxene in type 3 clasts: Fs20.1±2.8Wo 25.7±6.0 (Fs14.6-21.9Wo 17.6-31.4, N=6). Classification: Rumuruti Chondrite (R3-4) Specimens: 4.92 grams at UCLA; main mass with Matthew Stream. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
