Northwest Africa 12412 (NWA 12412) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2013 Nov Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: Purchased in Agadir by Vincent Jacques Physical characteristics: A single fresh-looking stone showing dark-gray to dark-green color. Pyroxene laths are easily visible in the cut surface. Dark and shiny parts (maskelynite) are distributed between pyroxenes. Texture varies between different parts showing some dense, crystal-packed areas. Petrography: Ophitic to sub-ophitic texture. Contains zoned (normal) high-Ca pyroxene, plagioclase (maskelynite), ilmenite, pyrrhotite, magnetite. Pyroxene average grain size is 500 μm. Geochemistry: Pyroxenes Fs35.5-48.5Wo10.3-30.0, average Fs43.6±4.3Wo15.1±6.8 FeO/MnO = 33.9±1.9 (n=6). Oxygen isotopes (R. Greenwood, OU): Δ17O= 0.248±0.003 ‰; δ18O= 5.554±0.117 ‰ (n=2); δ17O= 3.196±0.059 ‰. (La/Sm)N (ICP-MS, ULB)=1. Mg#=0.47; CaO=8.9wt% (ULB).
