Northwest Africa 12398 (NWA 12398)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Seven greyish fragments partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a monomict breccia predominantly composed of blocky up to 1.3 mm sized orthoproxenes grains and fine-grained cataclastic regions. Minor phases include plagioclase, chromite, FeS, and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene: Fs24.8±0.2Wo3.5±0.2 (Fs24.4-25.2Wo3.1-3.7, n=13, FeO/MnO=28-33); calcic plagioclase: An87.7±1.5 (An85.8-89.2, n=9)
