Northwest Africa 12407 (NWA 12407)

Purchased: 2016

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia with basaltic and black melt clasts set into a fine-grained clastic mineral matrix. Dominant minerals are magmatically zoned low-Ca pyroxenes, Fe-rich low-Ca pyroxenes with augite exsolution lamellae and calcic plagioclase typically 300-400 μm in size. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, and FeNi metal.

Geochemistry: magmatic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs25.9±8.2Wo2.1±1.0 (Fs16.0-35.8Wo1.0-3.8, n=16, FeO/MnO=25±4); pyroxene host to augite lamellae: Fs54.8±2.7Wo2.4±0.8 (Fs49.0-58.2Wo1.9-4.6, n=13, FeO/MnO=30±1); Ca-pyroxene: Fs23.5±1.9Wo42.0±0.9 (Fs19.4-26.6Wo40.0-43.2, n=13, FeO/MnO=27±1); calcic plagioclase: An90.8±2.4 (An87.0-93.2, n=13)
